What Is Craniosacral Therapy and How Can It Help You?

Craniosacral therapy is a gentle and non-invasive form of complementary medicine that focuses on the movement and balance of cerebrospinal fluid within the central nervous system. By using soft touch techniques, craniosacral therapy aims to release restrictions and improve the overall functioning of the body. This therapy can provide numerous benefits for physical and mental health.

Craniosacral therapy is based on several core principles. One of these principles is the idea that the body is interconnected, and any restriction or dysfunction in one area can impact the entire system. This holistic perspective acknowledges that the body functions as a unified whole, with various systems and structures working in harmony to maintain health.

Another principle of craniosacral therapy is the belief that the therapist's role is to facilitate the body's natural healing processes rather than force specific changes. This approach recognizes that the body has an innate wisdom and intelligence that knows how to heal itself. By providing gentle touch and support, therapists seek to create a safe and nurturing environment for the body to tap into its own healing potential.

Understanding Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy was developed in the 1970s by osteopathic physician John Upledger. It is based on the belief that the body has a natural capacity to heal and self-regulate. Through gentle touch, therapists evaluate and enhance the craniosacral system, which includes the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, as well as the cerebrospinal fluid that circulates within them.

Craniosacral therapy emphasizes the importance of listening to the body's subtle cues and rhythms. Practitioners are trained to develop a heightened sense of touch and perception, allowing them to detect even the most subtle changes in the craniosacral system. By attuning themselves to these subtle signals, therapists can tailor their interventions to meet the unique needs of each individual.

Craniosacral therapy is not intended to replace conventional medical treatments. Instead, it is often used as a complementary therapy, working alongside other forms of healthcare to support the body's natural healing processes.

What To Expect

Sessions Are Clothed

This type of therapy is performed with clothes on, so please choose comfortable clothing on the day of your visit. It is especially helpful if you do not wear jeans or hoods on your sweatshirt. Having your hair down out of clips and bands is also helpful.

At the Very Least, You Can Expect to Be Relaxed

Every session is different, but the first session tends to utilize techniques to balance your system and identify your unique tension patterns. The gentle touch that facilitates the integration of restrictions is profoundly relaxing.

It Is Possible to Become Emotional

This looks different for each person.  Emotions are stored in the body and may be released as the body releases and unwinds tension and restriction. This generally does not happen in the first session, but occasionally it does.

We Might Work Inside Your Mouth

If you are experiencing headaches, migraines, jaw pain, vertigo, tinnitus, poor sleep, or have had a concussion, the mouth work techniques are recommended once your system is balanced. These techniques are effective and surprisingly relaxing. Mouth work may be done after your body is balanced, and with your permission.

You May Feel Temporarily Worse Before You Feel Better

This is very rare but can happen. Sometimes a client reports more discomfort following a session. It may last for a few hours to a few days. After the discomfort subsides, most clients feel much better as their body integrates the new, healthier tissue patterns

It May Take a Few Days to Integrate With Your Body

Your body will continue to integrate the work that was done during your session for a few days afterward. Some clients report not feeling much more than relaxed immediately after a session but notice marked improvement when the body has adjusted to the integration of the work that was performed.
